The focus of this program will include the following major topics:

• Personal account of an expedition to the geographic North Pole
• Introduction to the Arctic region – comparisons with Antarctica
• Atmospheric and optical phenomena unique to the Polar Regions
• Science of sea ice, northern lights, climate change, ecology, etc.
• Distinctive animals of the Far North – their behavior and habitats
• Indigenous cultures – their traditional lifestyles and mythology

BE THE POLAR EXPLORER:

The focus of this program will include the following topics:

• Polar exploration history: John Franklin, Roald Amundsen, Fridtjof Nansen and others
• Descriptions of logistics planning, expedition gear and required training
• Polar travel – past & present: skiing, dog-sledding, kite-skiing, etc.
• Stories of contemporary explorers: Will Steger, Borge Ousland and others
• Polar firsts: Robert Peary, Sir Wally Herbert, Richard Byrd, Ann Bancroft and others

STAND AT THE NORTH POLE (*STEM compliant):

The focus of this program will include the following topics:

• Getting there: North Pole vs South Pole
• Physical comparisons of the Arctic to Antarctica near the geographic poles
• Personal accounts of expeditions to the geographic North Pole
• Life and conditions at Borneo Ice Base on the Arctic ice
• Atmospheric phenomena in the Arctic, properties and dynamics of sea ice
• The concept of time zones
• Investigation of Geographic North Pole vs Magnetic North Pole

HUNT LIKE THE POLAR BEAR:

The focus of this program will include the following topics:

• Basic Polar Bear facts: their habits and range throughout the circumpolar Arctic
• The importance of indigenous subsistence hunting rights
• Impacts of climate change on regional polar bear populations
• Other Arctic wildlife: narwhal, beluga, seal, Arctic wolf, Arctic fox, reindeer and others
• Conservation status, efforts and controversial legislation

LIVE LIKE THE INUIT / SAAMI / DOLGAN:

The focus of this program will include the following topics:

• Introduction to indigenous groups and territories across the circumpolar Arctic
• Indigenous lifestyles, cultural traditions, mythology and legends
• Animal husbandry, hunting methods and tools, food sources
• Clothing, dwelling types and nomadic methods of travel
• Discoveries of woolly mammoth remains in the Siberian tundra
• Indigenous art – traditional paintings, graphics, sculpture, music etc.
• Impacts of climate and societal change on traditional lifestyles

BE THE POLAR SCIENTIST (*STEM compliant):

The focus of this program will include the following topics:

• Description of the various types of polar research: Anthropological to Zoological
• Drilling of ice cores and what they reveal
• Investigation of atmospheric polar phenomena: auroras, sun dogs, fata morgana, etc.
• All about snow, sea ice, glaciers and icebergs
• Polar weather and geological facts
• Climate science, dynamics of ice, modeling and forecasts
• Introduction to ARMAP – Arctic Research Mapping Application

INTRODUCTION TO EMERGING ISSUES IN THE ARCTIC IN THE 21st CENTURY

• Geared primarily for upper high school and college students and adult audiences, this comprehensive presentation covers a broad range of Circumpolar North topics as viewed through the scope of Arctic indigenous peoples. These include: national governance, security and conflict, impacts of climate change, globalization, rights to self-determination, territorial claims, and environmental concerns. ARCTIC INDIGENOUS VISUAL ARTS

An introduction to the regional styles and types of artwork from around the Circumpolar North, this multimedia program will explore the cultural contexts; relationships between artistic expression and the Arctic environment; spirituality/mythology, and the artists’ responses to contact with non-native peoples. This is a STEAM program (Science Technology Engineering ARTS Mathematics).

Regions covered include the coastal North American Northwest and Alaska, Cape Dorset of Nunavut (Arctic Canada), Greenland, Finnmark (Lapland) in Scandinavia, and Siberia.
